As a convention goer of the eighties, this was the first Who related event I've ever managed to drag my wife to, and she enjoyed as much as I did. Had only a mild interest when I first heard about it, but then I saw you chair/compare a gig with Peter Davison and Colin Baker at the Cavern in Liverpool a while ago, I thought "yep, he's funny" and have kept my eye out for the show ever since, though having missed a gig in Rotherham (which is equal distance from me as Barnsley, 'bout 7 miles either way). Glad we made it this time. Very funny, and being a lifelong fan - born in '61, first memory The Chase! - I thought every comment hit the nail on the head. By sheer coincidence I read your review of the Complete Who Specials boxset in the current Doctor Who Magazine this morning, only to find your name at the end of it. Get it folks it's 2-3 pages of the the same humour. If you get this way again, I've got about a dozen friends who will comewith me next time.

Although a bit older than you I remember all sorts of things you describe. Not being able to watch Dr Who at the dinner table until my parents discovered I was feeding my food to the dog so I could get out of there. I cried when the sylv series was canceled and I was at university then. My credibility was squashed.
Because of the doctor i became an archaeologist and then a teacher. Just because of Doctor Who. It's mad that the things I did in the playground when I was eight are now the same things that eight year olds are doing now. Fantastic!!

Most of the people with me had next to no knowledge of Dr Who and still really enjoyed it, commenting afterwards how glad they were to have come. I'm hoping to have convinced them to join me in the view of a story or two...

I absolutely LOVED the show! My favvvvve bits were definately Abu Hamzer - I couldn't stop laughing for nearly 5 minutes after that! And the risotto and when you said about your son being sick - *shudders* made me feel sick that did! ANNDDD! the David Tennant voice overs! :O (L)(L) :D
Basically you made my night Toby, thanks for the uber cool comment on the poster - it's on my wall next to me! ;)
Amazing show performed by a class act - defo a must see for EVERYONE!
Good luck with the rest of your shows, I'm going to ask for the audio CD for Christmas!!

I'm not sure what they, or indeed myself, expected (we'd been told very little about it - I just liked the title of the show!) but we all came away absolutely enlightened and so much happier about the world and everything that goes on on it.
Thank you for a wonderful evening - good luck with the continued tour. Long may it last!

I didn't find myself at a disadvantage because I haven't watched any of the classic Doctor Who yet - seeing this show has made me determined to watch some old episodes. Toby tells the story of his passion for Doctor Who with absolute honesty and if you come out of the theatre without having laughed your head off and been moved close to tears then clearly you weren't listening properly.
A fabulous night out and a great birthday treat!

I thought it was an excellent show. Not the usual predictable left wing ramblings that you often hear, but genuinely good, perceptive, political and social observation. Drawing very clever and amusing parallels between the world we live in and our classic sci-fi TV show.
He had great energy, spontaneity and passion.
This web site unfortunately can't really give any idea of how good the show is.
The show was entertaining, thought provoking and above all, VERY FUNNY.
Best of luck with it in the future!

It fed my inner Who fan, it made me laugh far more than than I have of late, and some parts had me on the verge of tears. Toby is quite simply stunning - a brilliant performer whose timing and views of life, love and Doctor Who are just logical, when he explains them. If you never see another show, see this one... it's just perfect; and just when you think it can't get any better, *that* voice rings out.

I became a fan through my dad and haven't looked back since, and understand a lot of what you were getting at; I myself was laughed at (and still am) for my love for Doctor Who and still try to reason with people that it's more than just a children's show. It was an evening well spent with fellow fans and just enjoying myself and my favourite show. I left with a buzz and the need to watch Doctor Who and spread the word about this amazing show. Good Luck with the rest of the tour!

Coming to Glasgow, Scotland, and in front of a theatre full of Doctor Who fans - appearing to be somewhat derogatory about Doctor Number 7 Sylvester McCoy. At that point a little part of me, previously unknown to myself, wanted to stand up and shout you down with "He's my favourite Doctor, even if it's taken a comic like you to make me realise it"!
But seriously, what I did realise that I hadnt before, is how similar our shared experience of Doctor Who is. (By the way its "Doctor" not "Dr." Who - your CD cover is correct but your Flyer needs some serious proof reading - "Five Rounds Rapid" to your current proof reader!).
All this is in jest of course. And you made an evening of slight trepadation, my other half - equivelent to Mrs Toby, had accompanied me despite me explaining it was Doctor related! You made it an evening to remember, and I think she laughed even more than me! Your Dale Pike stories were memorable and what a punchline. Now I see how Torchwood figured out its name!
How a TV programme can touch a generation, and regenerate itself in the 21st century to still be relevent about people's hopes and fears is no more tremendously demonstrated than the story about your son and you living the same Doctor Who dream.
This is a must see one man stage show for fans and non fans alike.

Toby is a great story teller and this one comes straight from the heart. He tells you about his life, and how Doctor Who runs through it. From a lonely school kid, to his quest for the daddy gene.
If you’re a Doctor Who fan he really makes you proud to be one, you want to get up with him and shout YES!
He revaluates all that is good about the show, from acceptance and understanding, to saving the world with a plate of blamonge, a safety pin and a host of good ideas.
Never has the Doctor been so praised.
The moments when he tells you about his son waking him up, and his first thoughts on Billie Piper will have you laughing your head off.
Being a Doctor Who fan I have to say I’m biased, but I challenge you not to leave this show without a tear in your eye and a
Bubadubum, Bubadubum, Bubadubum, Bubadubum Woooooooooo
In your heart. | | | | | |

| | Date: | Sat 01 Mar 2008 21:35:31 GMT | | Subject: | Moths | | | Saw the show last night at the South Street Arts Centre in Reading, I bought the CD a while ago and thought it was brilliant - so I had some idea of what to expect. However, Toby's live show is so much better than the CD, and far more wide ranging in it's comedic scope - the BNP, the Royal Family, Star Wars, Thatcher, and American foreign policy are all humorously mocked through 'Doctor Who'. Obviously the aspect of the show that fans will enjoy the most are Toby's passion and sense of nostalgia for the 'classic' series - (loved the 'but that doesn't count' theory of fan continuity), and the sheer joy Toby shares with his son (but clearly not Mrs. Toby!) about the new series. Somehow Toby manages to make this highly amusing and incredibly heart warming at the same time - like the 'great big jessie' that I am I felt a slight (only slight mind) tear forming in the corner of my eye as Toby told us about how he and his son both shed a tear at K9's demise in 'School Reunion'. Very very funny indeed - loved the extracts from the '500 Year Diary' too. Absolutely brilliant, indeed to coin a phrase it was 'fantastic'.
Hope the tour goes well!
